London, Chatto & Windus, 1909.. FIRST EDITION 1909, LIMITED DE LUXE EDITION of 100 COPIES FOR SALE, THIS COPY IS NUMBER 9. Small 4to, approximately 260 x 195 mm, 10¼ x 7 ¾ inches, 48 colour plates, including frontispiece plus 12 sepia plates, all mounted with tissue guards and captioned in red, pages: xxx, 1-262 including index, publisher's full pictorial cream vellum, gilt lettering to spine and upper cover, gilt picture to upper cover, top edge gilt, other edges untrimmed, marbled endapers. Spine slightly bumped at tail, corners a little worn at tips, spine slightly dusty, lower cover has a pale mark to outer edge, 10 colour plates have pale foxing to margins, 8 very light and 2 a little heavy, 2 sepia plates also affected by pale foxing to the margins, 1 heavy and the other light, occasional pale foxing to margins of text, some tissue guards a little creased and foxed, pale age browning to endpapers, tiny spot of addesion affecting last endpaper and pastedown, otherwise a very good copy. Yoshio Markino (1869 1956) was a Japanese artist and author who spent much of his life in London. In 1893 he enrolled at the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art in San Francisco and stayed in the city for the next four years. In 1897 he went to London via New York, and settled in Chelsea where he spent most of his subsequent life and career (1897-1942). The Colour of London got critical acclaim and was followed in 1908 by The Colour of Paris and The Colour of Rome, and in 1912 by The Charm of London. Errata slip tipped in at the title page (SCARCE thus) .Frontispiece. This copy is VG+. Exterior is rich and clean. Gilt is bright.Minimal rubbing. Tips have minimal wear and top/bottom of spine with with modest crimping. Inside is unmarked, clear, and firmly bound. Only a hint of even toning. Very nice. Unusual to find this publisher's version and in this condition..

There are a couple of barely perceptible stains on the rear board. The spine ends are gently bumped, and there are a couple of small indentations in the top edges of the covers. The spine is very subtly rolled. There is a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endsheet. The rear endsheet has several small light stains.
