Inscribed on front endpaper by the author's son, Watt Matthews: "To Loyd and Norma / with appreciation and best wishes," signed, dated 4-20-1974. First University of Texas printing. Octavo (24cm). Tan cloth stamped in gilt, in cream jacket; map endpapers; [xviii],226,[4]pp; black and white illustrations. Straight and bright, about Fine; in the original dustwrapper, subtly toned at folds, Near Fine. Memoir of a pioneer family living on the Lambshead range of northwest Texas, near the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. Dobie: "...more than any other ranch chronicle I know, reveals the family life of old-time ranchers." This is the first University of Texas Press edition, folllowing the privately printed edtions of 1936 and 1958. Nicely inscribed by the author's son, the legendary wrangler Watt Matthews, described in New York Times obituary (1997) as "the last of his generation in one of the state's oldest and most prominent cattle families.
