Edinburgh: David Douglas, 1892. Thirty titles, bound in eighteen volumes. 16mo. Contemporary uniform three quarter tan calf, gilt labels, spines gilt extra, t.e.g., original pictorial front wrappers bound in. Some minor darkening and light rubbing, bookplates, otherwise a very attractive set. A quite interesting representation of this series, published in pocket-size format at a price of 1s per volume, occasionally at the expense of the American writers whose works were not protected due to laxity of international copyright laws. A few titles, however, seem to have enjoyed their authors's blessings; some are denoted as "Author's" editions, and at least one features a new Preface written expressly by the author. Authors here represented are: J.L. Allen (2 titles); John Burroughs (6 titles); George W. Cable (2 titles, including the actual first edition of MADAME DELPHINE, CARANCRO, AND GRANDE POINTE, BAL 2344 "not seen"), Mary E. Wilkins Freeman (2 titles); William Dean Howells (14 titles); Frank Stockton (2 titles) and William Winter (2 titles). A blurb from the ST. JAMES GAZETTE praises the series as "simply and tastefully bound ... a little model of typography ... and the contents are worthy of the dress." Some titles are cited in BAL as first separate or first English editions, others are cited in the reprint sections or not described at all.
