Original dark brown rib-grain cloth with gilt-stamped spine title; blind-stamped decoration on both boards. Small yellow bookdealer's label on front fixed endpaper for W.A. Leary's Cheap Book Store, Philadelphia. Slightly overlapping that label is a small printed bookplate (large label?) on front fixed endpaper indicating this belonged to the Whitpain Library at one point. No other remnants of library ownership. The Whitpain Library Company was a subscription library established in 1817 in Broad Ax, a village in Whitpain Township, Pennsylvania; in 1884 it reported a collection of about 2,000 volumes. Following the table of contents are 4 pages containing advertising for various other books by Noah Webster. Sabin, 102345. Six full page illustrations protected by tissue guards. Not paginated. Previous owners' signature and stamp on the first plain flyleaf, otherwise clean and unmarked internals. Except for slight shelfwear and scuffing of cover edges, in fine condition. Binding is square and tight.
