Monterey: Hotel del Monte, n.y.. Mora (1876-1947) was the cowboyest cowboy of them all -- though born in Uruguay, not the U.S.; painter, illustrator, muralist, cartoonist, sculptor, photographer, author, historian and more, this multi-talented Renaissance Man also lived with the Hopi and Navajo in Arizona for a time, photographing, drawing and writing about their lifestyle. Group of nine (out of 12) printed menus, each narrow small 4to (4 3/4" X 10"), heavy buff card stock, (4pp). Very good. Mild age toning, with the last more heavily age toned on upper half. Mora drew 12 dramatic pen-and-ink local history scenes in 1933-34 -- one for each month -- for this local institution. (Mora spent the last 27 years of his life in the Carmel and Pebble Beach area.) The inner left page of each menu contains "A Word About the Picture on the Front Page" and brief description of the artwork, while the right-hand side contains the menu of the month. Alphabetically by title (not chronologically by month), the scenes consist of: The Harbor of Refuge, Heritage of a Romantic Past, Mañana, Monterey Surrenders, The Month Was December, Old Spain Still Lives, The Reward of the Pathfinder, Trails the Caballeros Rode and Yankee vs. Caballero. A near-complete collection of this famed hotel-marketing artwork. Very scarce.
