Strong and sturdy binding that will lay flat but no damage. Very slight wear to cover corners and edges. Slight spine crimping. Few light areas of cover surface soiling. Faint store stock stamp on front fly leaf. Thin and light pen mark to front page ends - ends only. This scarce book is written in Russian except for the introduction which is in English. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. One of 300 copies of rare signed edition of Martyn Zadeka by influential exiled Russian writer Alexey Remizov - inscribed to his patroness Barbara Church, widow of Henry Church. Remizov was a symbolist-modernist writer who was a surrealist "avant la lettre." He was much admired by luminaries of the Parisian literary world including the editor of the Nouvelle Revue Française French Academicien Jean Paulhan and James Joyce. His works failed to find a publisher from 1931 to 1952. In 1953, devotees of his works founded a small publishing house so that his writings could see the light of day. A number of works were published between 1952 and 1957 in limited numbers. "It has been largely overlooked that the textual emancipation of dreams is a process that began much earlier than the surrealist "revolution" of the 1920s. This edition translated from the Russian by Ralph Parker whereas the edition published in the U.S. the same year by Frederick A. Praeger was translated by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley (the Praeger precedes this one per Fiene). Harrison E. Salisbury's January 22, 1963, review reads in part: "Of the two translations neither comes close to reproducing the rough vigor of the author's concentration camp slang .... However, Ralph Parker's version in the Dutton edition is superior to the patchwork thrown together by Max Hayward and Ronald Hingley for Praeger. The most striking blooper of the Hayward-Hingley translation is to put in the mouths of the prisoners the phrase 'Comrade Warder.'
