NY: Macmillan. VG/VG- (see notes). 1948. 1st THUS. hardcover. 12mo . 446pp . Frontis pulling from gutter, may have been re-tipped. Clipped DJ has some edgewear, tears to 1/4". With an ALS laid in (notes) While the book itself is NOT signed, this comes with a 20+ line autographed letter signed on Coffin's stationary to the author Samuel Shellaberger. In it he regrets that he has never received much appreciation from academic circles (despite a Pulitzer, of course!), and says he has enjoyed Shellaberger's novels, calling him "the Scott of our times". (We guess he means Sir Walter Scott??). Original envelope included. .
