FIRST and ONLY EDITION. 2 issues. 4°, original blue printed wrappers with wood-engraved border and wood-engraved vignette with arms of the Academia; Num. VIII has spine reinforced with brown paper. Caption titles. First uncut, with some dampstains; overall in good to very good condition. Second clean, but edges trimmed a bit; overall in very good condition. Early signature vertically on first page of Num. VIII ("Antonio ???"); same hand has written the subject of the issue in a blank space on the front wrapper. Pages [53]-74, final blank leaf; page [123]-146. *** FIRST and ONLY EDITION. Two issues of a rare periodical; a complete run consists of 16 issues, 1831-1832. No. 4 deals with the cultivation of land for agriculture, no. 8 with raising and processing flax.Alexandre António Vandelli (Lisbon, 1784-Rio de Janeiro, 1859), was the son of the distinguished Italian-born botanist Domingos Vandelli. He served as guarda-mór of the Academia Real das Sciências de Lisboa, Intendente Geral das Minas e Metaes, and was a member of the commission for the reform of weights and measures. He left Portugal for political reasons in 1834, entering the service of the Brazilian Empire.*** Fonseca, Pseudónimos p. 183: attributing the work to Alexandre Antonio Vandelli. On the author, see Innocêncio I, 29; and VIII, 30 (without mention of this work). Conefrey, Jornais, séries e periódicos portugueses 1826-1834 pp. 52, 55: noting that the Biblioteca Municipal do Porto has issues 1-14 (but a note in their catalogue says nos. 1-16 were issued), and the Biblioteca Nacional only issues 1-4. Silva Pereira, O Jornalismo portuguez p. 26, giving the dates 1831-1832 but not specifying the number of issues. Not in Universidade de Coimbra, Publicações periódicas portuguesas. Porbase locates three copies at the Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, calling for 16 issues (1831-1832), but without stating whether all copies are complete runs. Jisc repeats the copy at the British Library.
