The first seven chapters discuss the geology of coal generally (formation and origin, fossils as zonal indices, stratigraphy) and some general problems of mining; the remaining sixteen cover British coalfields in more detail, with one chapter to each area,and including sketch maps, a summary of the stratigraphy of the coalfields and the type and quantity of coal to be found. Excellent photographs of fossils. Condition notes: Externally shabby; front board worn and splashed, joints with spine strip frayed, spine strip worn and chipped at extremities, titles faded. Previous owner's names to front paste down, previous seller's note in pencil to front free end paper. Hinge strained at title page. One of the plates has been annotated, but in a neat and scholarly fashion, in pencil. External edges of text block soiled.
