Hartford Connecticut: L. Stebbins, 1865. first edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6 - 7" tall. 1st Printing 1 Copyright date 1865, first edition, first printing. Manuscript letter, ink on laid paper, 8vo, 4 pp., creased (as folded), dated April 10, 1865. Written from "Home" to "Dear Brother", from a sister, illegibly signed. Letter reflecting the excitement following the South's surrender (one day earlier.) The addressee is presumably a Union soldier, as the writer asks him to "Write soon and give a full account of what you have been through. From your sister D----," The letter begins with, "Hurrah! three cheers for Grant, Sheridan and the whole army of the Potomac... Lee surrendered his whole forces to Gen. Grant... Guns have been firing in all directions, all day." In her closing remarks, she requests that her brother "confiscate" a dress for her "from some of those rebel stores." Other interesting content. Description:
Though not stated, we assume this is a first edition as we have found other copies but not any earlier ones. Considerable wear to the original cover, including including fading, chipping and small tears at edges and spine. Spine is wear but no splits detected. Pages are in better condition. They are whole - none are missing, no tears, relatively little spotting or foxing. Except for the steel engravings scattered throughout the book. These are heavily foxed. Pages are clean and easy to read. Print is a bit larger than normal size. The first dozen pages or so are stained around the bottom front edge of the page. Writing on the first fly-leaf page Book draws primarily from the journal of Robert H. Kellogg, describing his life in a Confederate prison, as well as from other accounts by other prisoners in other Confederate prisons.
