New York: Neale Publishing Co, 1907. First Edition. Original Cloth. Fine-. First Printing. Crown 8vo:124pp. Publisher's forest green textured cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in gilt and ruled in brown, top edge gilt. Slight sunning to spine, else Fine. Dornbusch III, 1687. Nevins I, p.42. The Chancellorsville Campaign was fought from April 30 to May 6, 1863, in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, pitting Union Army Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's Army of the Potomac against an army less than half its size, General Robert E. Lee's Confederate Army of Northern Virginia. Chancellorsville is known as Lee's "perfect battle"; his risky decision to divide his army in the presence of a much larger enemy force brought a significant Confederate victory, the product of Lee's audacity and Hooker's timid decision making. But victory was tempered by heavy casualties and the wounding of Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson in his left arm by friendly fire. Jackson died of pneumonia eight days later, a loss Lee likened to losing his own right arm. (Wikipedia) N. B.
