About This Item
Heinemann, London, 1977. Reprint. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Near Fine Condition/Very Good. There are hundreds of prehistoric monuments throughout the British Isles, and some of the most spectacular are the circles and alignments of standing stones often dramatically situated in remote and barren parts of the country. This book grew out of visits to these sites and out of curiosity that so little was apparently known about their builders. In fact, as more extensive reading soon showed, research in the past decade has told us an immense amount about the society of early Britain and the possible purposes of these strange monuments. However most of this information is to be found in specialized, academic publications and some of it takes the form of complicated mathematical and astronomical theory. An attempt to introduce this recent material to the general public, with all the attendant risks of error and over-simplification, seemed worthwhile. This book is profusely illustrated by new photographs taken in Ireland, the Hebrides, the Orkneys, the Highlands, Yorkshire, southern England, Brittany - wherever the stones are found. Many show unusual monuments not seen in previous popular works. In addition there are specially drawn text plans, original rubbings of prehistoric carvings, and reproductions of old engravings. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. 240 pages. Dust Jacket is in very good condition, without tears or chips or other damage. Dust Jacket un-clipped.
