Gebbie & Barrie, Philadelphia, 1880; Nineteenth century photogravure, after the painting by Tony Robert-Fleury, depicting the dramatic moment when Philippe Pinel ordered the unshackling of female mental patients at Hopital de la Salpetriere asylum outside Paris, shortly after becoming chief physician there. It was Pinel (1745-1826) who first effected humane treatment of the mentally disturbed, and his pioneering efforts were instrumental in the development of the field of psychiatry. Sheet size 10 1/8" x 16 1/2", plate mark 9 1/2" x 12". Very Good Plus, clean, crisp, and bright. A rich and beautiful continuous tone gravure produced by premier Paris house Goupil & Cie.
