"Cinderella" and "The Two Gifts" by Edouard de Beaumont, Charles Perrault - 1886

[Leipzig: Insel-Verlag, 1903].. Folio sheet (33.7 x 26.5 cm), with image size 17 x 12.5 cm. Somewhat crudely matted, otherwise about fine. One of an unspecified but small number of proof impressions of this illustration by Behmer for the 1903 edition of Wilde's SALOME, translated by Hedwig Lachmann, and published in an edition of only fifty copies on Japan vellum. Captioned in pencil beneath the image "Fuer Buchen M." Although untitled here, it is referred to as "The Page of Herodias" in the secondary literature, and kneeling figure in black before a burning censer, with a barren tree and a full moon dominating the foreground and background.

Davis, 22.3.28" A very good copy in original grey canvas spine, lettered in black, with red paper covered boards with black lettering and illustration to the front board. Some loss to the paper on the boards, affecting 7 letters of the address at the bottom. Spine with just a little darkening. Overall a very good copy. Uncommon inscribed by Gill. --Evan Gill. Mono illustrations throughout by Steadman. Original black stiff card binding with a mono illustration to the front panel and purple and white lettering. A little bumping to the corners but overall a very good copy.

(9 x 6.7 inches).16 colour plates, each with a printed tissue paper guard, by Charles Brock (4 scenes from the story), and Charles Brittain (12 views of Exmoor and environs). A Fine copy in a fine leather binding by Bain of London. Half dark blue morocco, spine with raised bands, ruled in gilt. Compartments tooled and lettered in gilt. Blue cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Loosely inserted is a hand written letter from J. G. Bain, on company headed notepaper dated Christmas 1925, presenting this book to a customer. An interesting and beautiful edition with the plates showing not just characters from the tale but also views of the towns, villages and views around Exmoor that act as a backdrop for the novel.:

Publishers original burgundy cloth with decorative blind stamped floral design to both boards, the front board lettered and ruled in gilt. Spine ruled and lettered in gilt. Page edges untrimmed. Internally a fine bright and clean copy throughout. A little rubbing to the binding extremities and just a hint of fading to the spine but overall a very good, bright copy. Becoming increasingly difficult to find in collectable condition in the publishers cloth.

London: T. McClean / John Camden Hotten Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Very good copy, of what seems to be a combination of the McClean edition of 1855, and the Hotten edition of 1899. First titlepage and frontis are clearly from the 1855 edition, ( toned and foxed ), and second titlepage clearly states John Camden Hotten, 1859. All plates called for are present, but one is bound before the second title page. The binding appears to be a re-bind, incorporating the originall gilt stamped, pebbled blue cover.
