Black ink on paper out-ruled in gold inside fine illustration signed in neat Ottoman Turkish script: Muzehhibesi Rikkat 1364, illustrated by Rikkat 1945. Rikkat Kunt (1903-1986) was an academic and illustration artist. Hâfiz Osman (1642-1698) was a Dervish and Islamic calligrapher, born in Istanbul. He was tutor to the sultans Ahmed II, Mustafa II and Ahmed III, and was esteemed by the sultan Mustafa II, who held his inkwell as he wrote. Hâfiz Osman is credited with establishing the hilye. A hilye is a calligraphic panel containing a hadith-based text describing the Prophet's physical appearance and attributes. Hâfiz Osman incorporated such texts, which had been popular for some time, in a formal design that soon became standard for this art form. The drawings of Bobby Ross are a mix of ideas that depict human nature in a realistic and humorous way. He addresses fundamental questions about science, religion and social issues with ordinary objects by creating densely packed images with surprising combinations.
Arguably one of Bobby Ross's most well-received series is his Sex Series. This series is being offered for sale for the first time since purchased by its original owner in 1981. These are the original graphite drawings framed by the artist. Each is meticulously drawn showing difficult-to-imagine details and measuring 6" ht. x 5" w. inside the matting and exterior frame size of 13" ht. x 12" w. A fabulous set of signed graphite drawings. Special Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. This book was done under the supervision of Ettie Stettheimer. The type was set by hand and printed at the Banyan Press on Rives during July, August, September, and October 1949. The endsheets were printed by The Ram Press, the cover collotype by The Meridien Gravure Company, and the Signature linecut was made The Pioneer Rubber engraving Company. The book was handbound by Arno Werner. 250 copies were printed.
