London: William Heinemann Ltd 0 Book. Illus. by Arthur Rackham. Very Good. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. No date on verso of title page. Frontispiece NOT tipped in, though present and printed on glossy paper, tissue guard. All illustrations present with tissue guards. Green cloth with black pictorial stamping. Boards clean and bright, a touch of sunning along top & bottom edges. Exceedingly gentle bump at lower corner of front board. Spine solid, ends very gently bumped. Binding firm. Text block toned with some foxing. Previous owner's name on front paste down, else contents unmarked and clean. End papers with light toning and a hint of foxing. Tissue guards toned. DJ price clipped, very minor chipping along left portion of top edge on front panel; top of title lettering affected, though title still very legible & un-obscured. Very shallow chipping at spine head, corners; heel with very minimal chipping. Two small spots (about 1" each) of horizontal darkening along spine. Photographs available upon request. Jacket in very nice shape; scarce. Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall.
Synopsis
The full title of Charles Dickens' most famous work is technically A Christmas Carol in Prose, Being a Ghost-Story of Christmas. This novella was published on December 19, 1843, and the first edition run of 6000 copies were sold out by Christmas Eve of that year. The publication of the first edition was fraught with complications, and even though the book was received to positive reviews, profits of the book fell far below Dickens' expectations, and the financial strain caused rifts between Dickens and the original publisher, Chapman & Hall.
