About This Item

New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1897. [1897] Sixth edition hardcover. Maroon binding, gilt designs, gilt lettering, 540 pages, plus Author's Note and 10 pages of books offered by publisher at end. THIS IS NOT A FACSIMILE OR MORE RECENT REPRINT OF THIS FAMOUS BOOK - THIS IS THE ACTUAL 1897, SIXTH EDITION. Condition of binding: Age darken, with some soiling, minor wear to top/foot of spine. Old book plate of James Hamilton Saville on endpaper, top edge of textblock age darken, very faint age toning to pages, else overall Very Good Plus. Text is clear, very readable. Free of smelly humidity stains and the smell of a previous cigarette or cigar smoker. While this is a book of fiction, it could be defined as closer to non-fiction, since the author, Sir Hall Caine, has based his writing on diaries, letters, memoirs, sermons, and speeches of recognizable people. He presents the type of thinking and character of creed and culture of social effort and religious purpose, which he has seen in the life of England and America at the close of the 19th century. He addresses the religious life, the devil's acre, sanctuary, and the outer world - a man trying to pluck back a woman about to enter the gates of heaven. The young woman is Gloria Quayle, an actress, and the man is John Storm, who became a priest. The author was very famous during his lifetime, the most highly paid novelist of his day. The Christian is the first novel in Britain that sold over a million copies. The Christian was a very successful play that ran on Broadway in New York City. A nice collectible copy of this book. Note: We are a well-established, well-respected, ethical book dealer in business since 1991. We describe the condition of our books thoroughly and honestly, so you'll know exactly what you will be receiving when you order. We ship promptly. . Hard Cover. Very Good.
