The dust jacket is lightly edgeworn and rubbed, there is a previous owner's name and blindstamp on the front free endpaper with notation to the inner flap of the dust jacket. "When James Simpson was a medical student in Edinburgh, the most usual anaesthetic was whisky. Patients died from the shock and pain of an operation.
