About This Item

Chicago: Relig. Philo. Pub. Association, 1866. Cloth. Very Good +. The uncommon 1866 1st edition of this wonderful --and very early-- travel guide to Chicago. All 23 plates (as called for) are present and in very good condition: 17 of the plates are full-page engravings and 6 of them are fold-out engravings (all 23 of the plates are within the body of the text). The book itself has held up very nicely as well. Solid, tight and well-preserved in its original light-brown cloth. The gilt-titling along the front panel ("Chicago As It Is: A Strangers' and Tourists' Guide to the City of Chicago") remains bright and completely unrubbed. Just a touch of very light soiling to the panels and very light, occasional foxing to the text. Fabulous, detailed local ads constituting both the pastedowns and the front are rear endpapers. 16mo, "A Book of Interest to Visitors and A Work of Interesting Information --With Illustrations" (along the foot of the title page).
