Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. xi, 362pp. Line drawings, map, pictorial endpapers. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear. Tight and attractive first edition of this "Rivers of America" volume with delightful front jacket graphics, bearing a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Hansen, 1p, 7 3/4" X 11", New York, NY, 6 March 1959. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). On "World Almanac" letterhead citing him as editor, Hansen pays for a New York City Civil War Round Table event: "I am sending you herewith my check for $43.50 for single room with bath for the Antietam trip. I expect to have two guests who will share a room for two, and I will tell you Tuesday whether they want with or without bath and how solvent they are...." He pens a half dozen words at the close and signs boldly in full in black ink. FITZGERALD C8.
