Lambert, talented British provincial player 1870-early 1900s, signed and dated Nov. 30th 1868; a copy which passed through two important English chess libraries - inscribed on the ffep "From the Whitman Chess Library" and "J W Rimington Wilson Chess Library". A compilation of the games of one of the strongest players of the 17th century, who died at the young age of 34. Rare; very few copies have appeared at auction in the last 20 years. First published in English in 1656 as "The Royall Game of Chesse-play..." by Giochino Greco (1600- c.1634), also known as Il Calabrese. Lambert has six games recorded on chessgames.com from the Vizanagaram Tournement in London in 1883 and is profiled in British Chess Magazine Vol 22, p. 99-100. J. W. Rimington-Wilson's library is well described in "The J. W. Rimington-Wilson Library (part 1) blog by David Levy about Edmond Hoyle. The sales of "J. Rimington Wilson's, 1873... Channing W. Whitman's, May, 1874" are profiled in American Chess Magazine, Sept 1897. 12mo, 4 3/4 x 3", engraved frontispiece by I.S. Miller after C. D. Moor, a charming interior view of a chess game, and a plate of a chess board. Pp xxiii, [3], 212, errata on pp xxiii & the next leaf. Period brown calf boards, rebacked at an early date with raised bands, gilt rules on boards and spine. Spine head worn, a small gouge on the lower front board, a little bumped but pleasantly so, text block very bright. Contains the report of the Congress Committee and all 432 games with notes by Steinitz. This was a 20-man Double Round Robin Tournament. One of the longest tournaments in history. In the first half of the tournament, draws were counted as a half point. In the second half, they were replayed once. Between the 38 regular rounds, 8 replay rounds, and 4 game playoff for first at the end, there were 50 rounds all told (!). Like the 4th Congress, this tournament consisted largely of foreign masters. The retirement of Captain Mackenzie seems to date from this time (though some sources credit him as US Champion until his death in 1891), giving the top American finisher some claim on being de facto US Champion. First Hungarian edition.The World Chess Championship 1972 was a match for the World Chess Championship between challenger Bobby Fischer of the United States and defending champion Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union. The match took place in the Laugardalsholl arena in Reykjavík, Iceland, and has been dubbed the Match of the Century. Fischer became the first American born in the United States to win the world title, and the second American overall (Wilhelm Steinitz, the first world champion, became a naturalized American citizen in 1888). Two problems were especially dear to his heart: the fate of the European Jews and the problem of unemployment. The 2nd American Chess Congress was held at the Kennard House in Cleveland, 5-15 December 1871. Two decisive games (+2, -2, or +1 -1) were required against each opponent. There were 73 total games. No dates or round numbers are given in the tournament book. Players were responsible for playing from 9-12 am, 2-5 pm, and 7-10 pm each day, but may have been able to arrange their own time of play, and sequence of opponents. The Ohio newspapers have more details, including dates for most of the games.
The players: George Henry Mackenzie led an interesting life away from the chessboard. Eight players were invited to participate, including two very strong masters: Aron Nimzowitsch from Denmark, and Akiba Rubinstein from Poland. They met with six German chess masters that included Jacques Mieses, Friedrich Sämisch, Oscar Antze, Hans Duhm, Hermann Von Gottschall, and Walther Von Holzhausen. Games were played from August 9th to the 18th. Nimzowitsch won with a near perfect score of 6½ of 7, edging out Rubinstein by half a point. The prizes were awarded to the players at the Hotel Luisenhof. First edition.Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, including their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. The 1958 contest was held at the Hotel Provincial in Mar del Plata. and is part of an iconic beachfront complex, built in 1946 by the celebrated architect Alejandro Bustillo.

An elementary text, containing a brief survey of chess literature (Chess and chess writers), a description of the elements, a chapter giving the first few moves of the openings, and other sections on "ends of games" (elementary mates), Games actually played (5 examples), prob3ems with examples (7) and general rules for playing the game, with a list of places where chess is played (in England) and a list of chess periodicals. The American edition is slightly re-arranged pagination, otherwise as the English edition except for the omission of the final list of places where played and periodicals.

The 1990 WCC match between Garry Kasparov and Anatoly Karpov was held from October 8 to December 30. The match locale was split, with the first 12 games played in New York, USA, and the final 12 in Lyons, France. The prize fund was three million dollars, with 5/8 going to the winner. In case of a tie, the prize fund would be shared equally with Kasparov retaining the title.Unlike the 1987 WCC cycle in which Karpov was seeded directly into the final candidate match, this time he was only reserved a spot in the quarter finals, and thus had to win three mini-matches in order to face Kasparov. 19 unpaginated tournament bulletins (approximately 55 pages) with tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 1/2) bound in individual bulletin wrappers. First edition.The first Argentine Chess Championship was held in 1921. The Champion's title was granted after victorious or drawn match between previous champion and challenger, a winner of Torneo Mayor. The matches were done away in 1950 year, except for 1952. From 1953 the tournament was changed to an all-round invitation, although in many cases it was played with the Swiss system.
The 33rd championship was played in 1955 with Miguel Najdorf the victor in a twenty player contested event. Hector Rossetto was a clear second with a score of 14.5 one and half points behind the leader, followed by Erich Eliskases at 13.5.Condition:Edge wear, occasional notes, punch hole to hinges, hand drawn cross table indicating game pages else a very good copy.
