Panaji, Goa: Fundacao Oriente [Art center], 2001. 616p., giant softbound in 11x8.5 inch frenchfold wraps, black field titled in white and blue; item is a solid textblock of clay-coated alkaline paperstock, illustrated from family albums and scrapbooks, and mainstream journalism. A carefully but eccentrically designed book, unfortunately "perfectbound" - an unfortunate technique given the size and sheer weight of these hundreds of leaves of heavy archival-grade paper. So far no detachments and thus a fine-looking copy, entirely clean and unmarked. Boxer made reputations in several fields, most especially (for our purposes) in research literature on the Portuguese seaborne empire, which lasted four hundred years from 1415 CE. Find, laid in, a brief jocular note to John Coll, the map expert attached to John Howell Books in San Francisco (closed 1985).

Very good condition. Comprehensive biography of the outstanding English scholar of the Lusophone world. From the publisher's website: "Charles Ralph Boxer was born on the Isle of Wight in 1904. On his father's side, he was a descendant of an illustrious British family that had served in command positions in every British war since the French Revolution. While that family may have been of Huguenot origin, his mother's hailed from Scotland. Her forebears became successful pastoralists in nineteenth-century Tasmania and in Australia.
