About This Item

New York and London: D. Appleton & Company. Very Good with no dust jacket; Underlining and notes to two pages.. 1915. First Printing. Hardcover. Green cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine. Jastrow was a Polish-born professor of the young science of psychology at the University of Wisconsin for nearly forty years. He worked to promote and popularize psychological theories and experiments among the general public and was particularly interested in research on optical and psychological illusions and debunking parapsychology. In this volume, published after his first nervous breakdown, he details his theories about perceived sexual and racial differences in human behavior filtered through the lens of his own biases and prejudices; to whit, his explanations of female hysteria, "the yellow peril", and this gem: "Speaking broadly, the negro mind has been adequate to follow and adopt the patterns of activity evolved by a culture rated as vastly superior, infinitely more complex than that is which he would now find himself, had he remained in his original habitat." xviii, 596 pp. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
