Cover and cloth clean, a few small pale scratches to rear board. Illustrated endpapers slightly tanned. In original very good color illustrated dust jacket, with a few nicks from the tail of the spine, a few closed tears to edges and light soil. Nineteenth of the Oz story books. A very nice example of a title in the very scarce dust jacket.

This book was formatted as a Western European book, from front to back, with the front cover ties. The front cover is detached and the remaining ribbon ties frayed and worn. A collaboration between two brothers, Uriel Birnbaum (1894-1956) did the German text. There are hand-colored illustrations (10 in-text and 3 prefatory). Menachem Birnbaum was the second son of the Jewish philosopher Nathan Birnbaum and his wife Rosa Korngut. Menachem Birnbaum lived in Berlin from 1911 – 1914, then returned from 1919-1933. He emigrated to the Netherlands, where he was arrested in 1943 by the Gestapo and deported to Poland, where it is believed he perished in Auschwitz in 1944. The Spamersche Buchdruckerei is also well-remembered for printing illustrations of the German Expressionists, later denounced by National Socialist propagandists as "Degenerate." The interior condition of this rare bilingual German-Jewish imprint is fine.

Leave it to Conrad Cornelius o'Donald o'Dell (with a little help from Dr. Seuss) to create an entirely new alphabet continuing from Z! This rhyming picture book introduces twenty new letters and the creatures that one can spell with them. This book was recently withdrawn from publication by the steward of Geisel's literary legacy, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, due to certain stereotypes featured in one of the images in the book.

A colourful art book, illustrating the famous Passover hymn Had Gadjo (Chad Gadya in English spelling).Menachem (18931944) and Uriel Birnbaum (18941956) were sons of Austrian-Jewish Philosopher and journalist Nathan Birnbaum (1864-1937).Menachem was an illustrator and portrait painter who lived in Berlin from 1911 until 1914 and again from 1919 until 1933. He then emigrated to the Netherlands. In the spring of 1943 he was arrested by the Gestapo and with his relatives and transported to a Nazi concentration camp - presumably Auschwitz, where he died. Uriel, artist and poet, who had also illustrated a number of books during his lifetime, survived the war in the Netherlands. Vinograd, Berlin 2713.

Prague: Svoboda, 1969. Later Czech edition. Hardcover. Very good -. 209 pp. Octavo. [20.5 cm]. Blue cloth over boards with stamped illustration of eyeglasses, a pipe, and a pen on front cover. Publisher's pink top stain. Original dust jacket is in very good- condition, intact but foxed, toned, and mildly torn at edges and corners. Water damage to bottom portion of back cover, but textblock and dust jacket are unaffected. Written in his mother tongue, apek writes short essays about specific words and their uses and idiocyncracies. The second portion of the book moves into a broader reflection on the use of phrases and idioms and their cultural significance.
