A "shape book": string tied in elephant head-shaped wrappers. 123pp, 88pp ads, (2pp index). Small chip, and slight erosion on the front wrapper, tiny and insignificant stain on the very edge of a couple of pages, a very good or better copy of a very fragile book. Wonderful tour book of the circus' circuit in 1897 with portraits of some of the acts, executives, personnel, etc., and with extensive statistics. Rare. Not in *OCLC*.

One-page secretarial letter, folded for self-mailing, to William Oliver of Elberton, Georgia from "Chang and Eng Siamese Twins," dated April 28, 1839. Dampstains, folds and small tears professionally strengthened, overall good. The twins inquire after the health of their dog: "Sir, We are anxious to hear of our poor old Dog & should feel very much obliged by your informing us of his fate - whether he is dead or alive & if alive whether you think he will recover. Yours very respectfully, C. Harris for Chang & Eng Siamese Twins." Born in 1811 in what is now Thailand, the twins came to America in 1829 and caused such a sensation that "Siamese" became the popular term for all conjoined twins. Although they left their home country essentially enslaved to a British promoter, the twins were astute businessmen and were able to get the better of P.T. Illustrated paper covered boards with a metallic sheen printed in shades of red, blue and green, unpaginated, eighty pages. Some cover wear, mainly heavy rubbing to the extremities and some surface chipping to the corners and along the spine edges, good hinges (front hinge just starting from the bottom, still very secure), good text block with no loosened pages, pages clean with a very few instances of finger soil to the margins, short gift inscription in pencil on the front free endpaper, dampstains along the upper portions of the hinges, not affecting the interior of the book, pages free from chips, tears or markings.
