Scottish medical practitioners i the eighteenth century gained a Europe-wide reputation. Prior to the eighteenth century Scotland must be regarded as a medically backward country, yet by the end of the century Edinburgh had become one of Europe's major medical centers, attracting students from all over the English-speaking world.
