About This Item

Philadelphia: The Beck Engraving Company, 1901. Hardcover. Revised by E.A. Kopp. Small 4to. Red cloth with gilt lettering. (Ca. 400pp). Top edge gilt. Deckle outer edges. Color frontispiece, extensive full-page plates. Near fine. Handsome and tight first edition. Schemm (1852-1909) ran the brewery founded by his father, but spent more time publishing private catalogues showing off his vast art collection. A hefty and flashy production, with title page noting "Gallery Schemm" in red and black title underlined in red. The blank dedication page preceding the title page features a halftone portrait of Schemm and blank red-dotted lines to be filled in -- this example being sent from "Mrs. Charles P. Kopp" (likely related to the book's reviser E.A. Kopp) to "Mrs. John G. Leitenberger. / August 1st, 1911."
