[New York: The Company, 1931]. . 8vo, embossed tan cloth, simulating leather, front printed in dark brown featuring Mercury hold a caduceus and holding aloft a basket of "goodies". OCLC shows two holdings: New York University and a Florida institution.Fascinating document listing high-end groceries--14 oz Malossol for $9.50 and other tear-provoking glories of years past.The firm, established in 1848, also sold household cleaning products and some utensils. Imported cigars were a huge item (6 pp) and considering that Prohibition was not repealed until December 1933, the "non-alcoholic beverages" section is a mine-field of obfustication, including, as it does, such items as Grand Mariner, Cointrreau and Benedictine (each 12% alcohol, i.e. 24 proof), rye, bitters (40%), many wines and beer and an intriguing non-alocoholic "Gin" made by Burroughs, the manufacturer of our present-day Beefeaters.The firm had a building on at 48-52 East 43rd Street in New York City.NYHS has the 1927 and 1937 catalogues.
