About This Item

Nottingham: [Privately Printed by T. Forman and Sons], 1874. First and only edition, large 8vo (240 x 160 mm), 55, [1]pp., well illustrated with 60 mounted albumen prints on limp card, each depicting between 3 to 25 items of porcelain from the collection (corresponding catalogue number supplied in MS. to each item), the catalogue consists of 740 items with printed descriptions, continued from 741 to 771 in MS. some light spotting, cont. dark maroon cloth, gilt border to covers, spine lettered in gilt, slightly rubbed. Principally the collection of Richard Waldo Sibthorp (1792–1879), Church of England clergyman and Roman Catholic convert, but added to by various members of the Sibthorp family of Canwick Hall, Lincolnshire. On Richard's death the collection passed to his nephew Coningsby Charles Sibthorp (1846-1932) and later to be sold for charity in an anonymously at Christie's on 2nd March 1877. This copy bears the signature of Coningsby Charles Sibthorp at the head of the title page and the MS. additions appear to be in his hand. Gernsheim, 582; Extremely rare, Copac locates a single copy at the V&A; OCLC adds a further copy at the Metropolitan Museum New York.
