About This Item

Venice: Nella stamperia di Modesto Fenzo, 1776. First edition. Engraved arms on title page. viii, 179 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Contemporary pre-binding stiff wrappers, untrimmed. An exceptionally attractive copy, fine. First edition. Engraved arms on title page. viii, 179 pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Tommaso Farsetti's fine collection of books and manuscripts was extremely rich in Italian literature and history. A series of specialised catalogues was published between 1771 and 1778, prepared by the distinguished Venetian librarian Jacopo Morelli (1745-1819), with the collector's assistance-all of which are rare. This catalogue of Italian plays is preceded by an introduction by Farsetti in which he explains his criteria for inclusion. There are bibliographical notes to many of the entries and omissions from Allacci's Drammaturgia are noted. A 28-page list of additions was added to some later issues, but this exceptionally fine copy is clearly of the earliest issue, before the additions were made. OCLC lists copies at Yale, Newberry, Univ of Chicago, Harvard, Toronto, BL, BNF, Cambridge.
