About This Item

New York: Random House,, 1957. INSCRIBED CAT IN THE HAT Small quarto. Original unlaminated pictorial paper-covered boards. With the pictorial dust jacket. Housed in a turquoise full morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery with an onlay of The Cat in the Hat. Illustrated throughout by the author in two colours. An excellent copy in the jacket that is just a little rubbed at the extremities. First edition, first printing, inscribed by Dr. Seuss on verso of front endpaper, "for Brent, best wishes, Dr. Seuss". This is the first issue, with the price code on the jacket 200/200 and the boards not laminated as in later issues. This is an exceptionally nice example of the landmark children's book, entirely unrestored. Grolier Club, One Hundred Books Famous in Children's Literature, 95; Younger & Hirsch 7.

Synopsis

The Cat in the Hat is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, featuring a tall, anthropomorphic, mischievous cat, wearing a tall, red and white striped hat, and a bowtie. He also carries an umbrella. With the series of Beginner Books that The Cat inaugurated, Seuss promoted both his name and the cause of elementary literacy in the United States.
