About This Item
New York: McGraw-Hill, 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Former owner's names on first free end-paper; else fine/torn. 4to. Cloth. Pp. 116. Illustrated: 160 pp. of plates.
Photographs by A. F. Kersting. Translated from the German by J. Maxwell Brownjohn. From the end of the 11th Century—and for almost four hundred years—thousands of men—princes and peasants and everyone in between—took up the call from Rome to save Jerusalem from the infidels. Their motives were pious or vainglorious or mercenary—sometimes all three. The remnants of this astonishing episode can still be seen throughout the Levant in a series of fortifications which were built as offensive bases from which the Crusaders could maraude the surrounding areas controlled by the enemy.
