Cambridge, Boston, USA: Riverside Press, 1958. Hardcover. Very Good/Good. 5.75 X 8.5. h/b 589 pages, condition is very good, some edge wear and tears to the DJ. The story centers around the ancient feudal family of Fratta, existing in a shabby aura of magnificence, while in the grass-covered courts and beneath the moldering towers of its fantastic castle is growing up the new generation that will replace it. Like War and peace, it is a vast epic of Europe in ferment, written when the events described still had the freshness of living memory. But it is very mush a Latin epic, filled with love, intrigue, and a tremendous appetite for life. One of the main protagonists in the drama is the city of Venice itself, in decadence, shame, and eventual hope of renascence in a united Italy: a symbol of past glory and future promise, of romance no less than political power. The author is fully as extraordinary as his novel. Born in Padua in 1831, Ippolito Nievo crowded as much incident into the brief thirty years of his life as into the broad canvas of his book. Poet, philosopher, dreamer, conspirator, and soldier, he wanted to live dangerously and is reported to have shielded Garibaldi with his own body at the battle of Calatafimi. He was lost at sea in 1861. The Castle of Fratta was written in a fury of creative effort in only eight months when the author was twenty-seven years old.

Boston, MA Houghton Mifflin , 1958. Hardcover First Edition Thus [1958]; First Printing, so stated. This English translation was first published by Oxford University Press in 1967 and was published in Italian in 1867. EX-LIBRARY REBOUND FOR LIBRARY CIRCULATION and showing the usual marks and indications thereof. Pocket removed from the rear endpaper and some other library plate removed from the front free endpaper. Removed from circulation and discarded. Else, Very Near Fine in Very Good DJ: The Book shows only faint shelf soiling along the bottom edge of the boards; the binding is square and secure; the text is clean. The DJ shows moderate wear to the extremities; sparse loss to chips and tiny nicks; mild rubbing to the panels; the backstrip is lightly sunned, but the titles and designs thereon remain legible; the price has been clipped. Remains a handsome, little used reading copy: clean, sturdy, and quite presentable in a moderately worn, but intact DJ. NOT a Remainder or Book-Club. 8vo. (8.25 x… Read More

Description:
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1958. Hardcover. Translation by Lovett F. Edwards. 8vo. Light blue cloth with gilt lettering and dark blue pictorial spine stamping, pictorial dust jacket. xv, 589pp. Very good/good plus. Jacket quite edgeworn and rubbed, with small edge chips -- yet complete and fairly attractive nonetheless. A tight and nice first U.S. edition of the first-ever translation of this 1857 novel ("Confessions of an Italian") but not published in Italian until 1867 by the Italian writer and journalist (1831-61) -- often called the most important novel about the Italian Risorgimento. Rather uncommon.
