London: Lockwood & Co., 1866. First UK Edition. sm8v - 9 cm, [x], 174 pp., (2), 16 pp publisher's advertisements at rear. Black-and-white portraiture frontispiece of Musgrave, vignette on title page, fold-out map. Publisher's original dark blue cloth with bright gilt titles on cover and spine, bright gilt de-bossed image of the "Grafton" on front cover. Internally with no prior ownership markings and tight hinges. Exterior cloth with slight wear to extremities, otherwise a very clean and complete. A Very Good+ copy of a very scarce publication. — Ferguson 13031; Hill 1212

"Musgrave's fascinating story of shipwreck, life on the Auckland Islands for a year and a half, and the difficult journey of over 400 km in a phoenix boat built from the wreckage to Port Adventure, Stewart Island, New Zealand."— Hill

A gripping account of the wreck of the 64 ton schooner "Grafton" in January of 1864 and the survival of its crew. This is a compelling story of resourcefulness, ingenuity, perseverance, survival and rescue. This first person narrative based on the private journals of Captain Musgrave was later published under the title of Wrecked on a Reef, published by T. Nelson and Sons, London from 1874 – 1892. For a modern re-telling and excellent overview of the narrative, read the modern publication entitled 'Island of the Lost' by Joan Druett. It is one of those reads that is very difficult to put down once you begin. A separate account by mate F.E. Raynal was published in 1870 in the original French.
