Inscribed in 1937 by Charles Webb, the president of the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals, "under whose auspices [this limited edition] is published." M.A. DeWolfe Howe, the recipient, has penned a long note above the inscription, concerning a 1930 visit to Charleston, a subsequent articles he wrote concerning the songs, and how he came to receive this copy in 1937; Howe (1864-1960) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1925 for his biography of Barrett Wendell, himself a biographer of Cotton Mather. Very good. Gilt-stamped decorated two tone cloth, gilt spine title. (10439).
