First edition, # 286 of 400 copies signed by each of the 16 contributors. 4to. x, (2), 326, (4) pp. Plates, some in color, double-page color map of the South Carolina low country. The South Carolina low country as portrayed by the leading writers, poets, and artists of the day. Inscribed in 1937 by Charles Webb, the president of the Society for the Preservation of Spirituals, "under whose auspices [this limited edition] is published." M.A. DeWolfe Howe, the recipient, has penned a long note above the inscription, concerning a 1930 visit to Charleston, a subsequent articles he wrote concerning the songs, and how he came to receive this copy in 1937; Howe (1864-1960) won the Pulitzer Prize in 1925 for his biography of Barrett Wendell, himself a biographer of Cotton Mather. Very good. Gilt-stamped decorated two tone cloth, gilt spine title. (10439).
