Hamish Hamilton, London, 1953. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Poor. 224pp., list of illustrations. Black and white photographic portrait frontispiece. Within the text there are another 7 black and white photographs. Maroon coloured boards with gilt writing on the spine. Corners of the book are bumped and rubbed and shelf wear evident to the top and bottom book edges. There is a stain on the front panel (? grease ] and there are various marks on the back panel as well. Dust marks to the paper edge. Browning and handling marks to the endpapers and there is very faint foxing to the internal pages. The head and the heel of the spine a soft and bumped. Illustrated dustwrapper, showing men in silhouettes with guards with a black, white and red background, with white and black writing on the front panel and white on the spine. The dustwrapper is in pretty poor shape and is now protected by library sleeving. All corners are chipped with loss, and top one-third of the spine is completely missing. The dustwrapper is rubbed, faded and quite grubby in parts. The top and bottom edges are a chipped, with loss, with associated creasing. There is staining on the rear fold over, measuring 2" x 3" from the bottom edge. The author spent two and a half years as a prisoner of war during Korea conflict. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
