[New York, 1908. Softcover. Near Fine. One leaf folded to make four pages. Small chip at lower right corner. Small ink stamp on verso of second leaf. Light tanning and wear. About very good. A scarce pamphlet issued by the National Christian Congress Association and the National Lincoln Colored Republicans. The text is a warning to Black voters to stick with the Republican Party and its presidential candidate William Howard Taft in the 1908 election, despite lingering resentment over the 1906 Brownsville Affair, in which Theodore Roosevelt dishonorably discharged over one hundred sixty Buffalo Soldiers after a murder in a saloon near their barracks at Fort Brown, Texas. It reads, in part: "The republican party as a whole is not responsible in the Brownsville episode, or any other local grievances that have existed or may exist. We believe we voice 95 per cent of the Negro vote in that they believe in the principles and policies of the republican party. If we desert the republican party at this political crisis, to whom [sic] shall we vote for? Vote the democratic ticket -- aiding the 'solid south' to put Wm. J. Bryan in the White House, and our political, civil, and general interests in the hands of... the framers of the institutions that has disenfranchised your colored brethren throughout the southland? Nay, a thousand times, no." A rare and attractive political pamphlet. Not in *OCLC.*.
