Lodz was the first ghetto the Nazis established after the invasion of Poland and within 6 months it was sealed and segregated from the surrounding so well that the Polish underground was never able to penetrate it. Between 1940 and 1944, 43,000 people died of hunger and disease. Grossman was an artist and respected photographer before the war, and when sentenced to the ghetto, he obsessively and secretly documented life in the Lodz ghetto and the slow death of his family members. He died in the final days of the war, during a forced march out of the concentration camp he had been sent to.
