""When answering my letters, requesting information about their communities, several Superiors have asked why, as a Roman Catholic, I should be sufficiently interested in Anglican religious orders to think it worth while to write a book about them! Very much the same surprise has been expressed by some of my co-religionists when I mentioned the work on which I was engaged. So I explained that the subject is one which has attracted me for nearly half a century, ever since I was a youth of fifteen and chanced to pick up a copy of The Life of Father Ignatius, O.S.B., The Monk of Llanthony by the Baroness de Bertouch (London, 1940) - a strange introduction to the monastic life! Since then this interest has grown, rather than decreased. It was revived definitely about fifteen years ago when I added a long introductory chapter, dealing with religious communities in the Church of England, to The Benedictines of Caldey (London, 1940). Then one day it struck me that it was high time that somebody wrote an up-to-date history of Anglican religious communities...." - Foreword from The Call of the Cloister: Religious Communities And Kindred Bodies In The Anglican Communion
