About This Item

Time-Life Books, 1973. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. No dustjacket. In Very Good+ condition. Small nick to spine. Issue point of Single hourglass on last page. Cactus Country is one of twenty-seven volumes from the Time-Life book series The American Wilderness. Published in the 1970s, this series introduces the reader to the wilderness areas of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This volume portrays the geography, plants, and animals of the Sonoran Desert in southern Arizona and northern Mexico. Topics covered include the Superstition and Kofa Mountains, Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, El Gran Desierto, and the various types of cacti found in the Sonoran Desert. Edward Abbey's informal and engaging writing style makes the informative narrative easy to read; numerous photographs supplement the text. Edward Paul Abbey (1927 - 1989) was an American author, essayist, and anarchist, noted for his advocacy of environmental issues and criticism of public land policies. His best-known works include Desert Solitaire, a non-fiction autobiographical account of his time as a park ranger at Arches National Park considered to be an iconic work of nature writing and a staple of early environmentalist writing; the novel The Monkey Wrench Gang, which has been cited as an inspiration by environmentalists and groups defending nature by various means, also called eco-warriors; his novel Hayduke Lives!; and his essay collections Down the River (with Henry Thoreau & Other Friends) (1982) and One Life at a Time, Please (1988).
