About This Item

London England: Vermilion, 1998. Hardback. They told John Diamond the lump on his neck was just a cyst. It turned out to be cancer. Well, why woundn't it be? It's the disease a third of us gets as some time or another, and the disease that will kill at least a quarter of us - even hypochondriacs like Diamond. But his was one of the good cancers: it was a near certainty that it could be cured. Until it turned out to be one of the less good cancers, the sort that might succumb to surgery and raiotherapy and the rest - but again might not. The author follows his own cancer from its diagnosis through its treatment to - well who knows where to? As he stumbles through the stages of the disease and its remedies he reflects on the bality of cancer, the inability of others to deal with his illness, they myths and taboos which surround the word. He rails against those who see cancer as some sort of battle where victory goes only to the brave and the pure of heart, and against those who believe that the cancer can only be cured by positive thinking and alternative medicine. But, above all, he opens his eyes wide and faces, with wit and trepidation, that which most of us refuse to face until it's almost too late. 240 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions etc.) . First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Harback.
