About This Item

Chichester, Sussex: Phillimore, 1990. A Fine unmarked copy with near Fine dustjacket which is price clipped. 167 illustrations and map endpapers. Seaford is a paradox. It is a town by the sea but not really a seaside town. Lying on the coast between Brighton and Eastbourne, it was a prosperous Cinque Port and a Parliamentary constituency six centuries before the patronage of the Prince Regent and the Duke of Devonshire led to the development of the little villages of Brighthelmstone and Bourne into sophisticated resorts. Seaford's aristocratic patrons were the Pelhams and when the Duke of Newcastle used the town as one of his pocket boroughs in the 18th century his patronage was in the form of 'jobs for the boys' in return for votes at the election. This ancient port, parish, town and borough has seen days of greater importance and, at times, made its rough and rumbustious mark upon history, as this book reveals. 13. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
