Pages complete xxiv + 180, with 250 full-page black and white engravings on card with captioned tissue-guards.Containing two hundred and fifty beautiful engravings selected from the Dore Bible, Milton, Dante's Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso, Atala, Fontaine Fairy Realm, Don Quixote, Baron Munchausen, Croquemitaine with critical essays by Edmund Ollier.Page edges lightly scuffed and rubbed with some small scratches to cover boards - some remedial work done to secure the cover boards and spine, but otherwise good. Card plates bright but some foxing to the outer edges. Some foxing to the later text pages.The plate index is a little tricky to use, but all plates are present with the following corrections:Plate 75 misplaced to p130, plate 91 misplaced to p95.Note: This volume is heavy (38x31x10cm, approx 10kg). Arrangements can be negotiated for the most cost effective method of delivery.

Descriptive text includes a short history of the Los Angeles Fire Department: "In May, 1875, Engine Company No. 2 was organized."

Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

Small octavo : pp. 4 blank (28) 436, 2 blank : new eps : gilt dentelles with floral motif : polished calf boards with triple gilt ruled border surrounding a floral and foliate border : rebacked with red leather title panel lettered in gilt and the publication year in gilt to tail of spine. Long note in small hand to first blank detailing the purchase of the volume in 1840 and some notes on the poet : trimmed at the head of the leaves : corners slightly rounded and gilt worn in patches but mostly bright. Thomas Randolph (1605-1635) was a poet, playwright and wit of great promise who was expected by many to become poet laureate after his mentor Ben Johnson. Removed shelf labels from the spines and paper label on the front covers. Ink stamps on the title pages (one from Austria and one in Russian). The title labels on the spines are worn with two showing heavy chipping and pest damage. In Volume IV, there are burn marks at the tops of pages 229-239 with some loss of text (heavy loss on the last fe3w pages. The text blocks are quite sound. A scarce early work on Napoleon. Questionable, a first tourist guide - In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries it was fashionable to take a boat tour down the Wye Valley, to view its romantic sites and picturesque landscape. 'Tourists' dined at specific locations, took walks to particular viewpoints and visited specific romantic ruins, making the 'Wye Tour' one of the first package holidays. In 1768 Gilpin published a popular Essay on Prints, where he defined the picturesque as "that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture" and began to expound his "principles of picturesque beauty", based largely on his knowledge of landscape painting.
