A little rubbing to the dustwrapper corners. After the fall of Singapore in 1942 the author became a prisoner of war of the Japanese. He spent that time in Singapore and in the Thailand-Burma railway camps. " during this time, in furtive secrecy, he made diary notes, sketches and paintings recording life and conditions around him, using whatever materials he could scrounge. He also worked beside the renowned Australian surgeon 'Weary' Dunlop, a fellow prisoner, documenting the ravages of disease, wounds and starvation as well as the ingenious medical equipment fabricated in the camps. Amid the overwhelming mystery on all sides Chalker could always find beauty, and his illustrations include delicate renderings of local flora and scenery." -- from the front fold over panel blurb.
