Description:
London: Macmillan, 1977. First edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/fine. A very nice copy of the first Brother Cadfael novel. In this book Edith Pargeter combined her excellent historical novel abilities with her nom-de-plume Ellis Peters' well-constructed mysteries and started the boom in historical mysteries that continues to this day. There are many earlier examples of the form, but this is where it takes off and becomes a major publishing category. Historically important, well written, and a scarce book to find in nice condition. This copy has a previous owner's minuscule inscription on the front free endpaper (signature and date of 10 Dec 77, and the cryptic notation "F.E." indicating it was purchased through British bookseller Francis Edwards Ltd.), and very slight bumping to the spine, both head and tail, creasing the jacket slightly. The jacket is unclipped, and the book was not read more than once or twice. A nice copy of a cornerstone volume. Any photo attached to my listings are of the actual…

320 pages. Small octavo (7 1/2" x 5 1/4") bound in original publisher's maroon with silver lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Jacket design by Fritz Wegner. (Bruccoli A10.1.a.) First edition, first printing. The English edition preceded the American by a few months.Critics and writers, ranging from W. H. Auden to Evelyn Waugh to Ian Fleming, greatly admired the finely wrought prose of Raymond Chandler. Although his swift-moving, hardboiled style was inspired mostly by Dashiell Hammett, his sharp and lyrical similes are original: "The muzzle of the Luger looked like the mouth of the Second Street tunnel"; "The minutes went by on tiptoe, with their fingers to their lips", defining private eye fiction genre, and leading to the coining of the adjective 'Chandleresque', which is subject and object of parody and pastiche. Yet, Philip Marlowe is not a stereotypical tough guy, but a complex, sometimes sentimental man of few friends, who attended university, speaks some Spanish and, at times,…

1797 RARE & Important Judaica Livorno Italy Jewish Sefer Mikdash Hebrew PrayerA rare, 18th-century Jewish prayer book entitled 'Sefer Avodat Mikdash'. This book, published in Livorno, Italy in 1797, was a study into the behaviors expected in a Jewish synagogue and temple – or simply a Jewish guide to sanctuary. Notably, Livorno became a hub for Jewish immigrants in the 17th-century and their presence only grew throughout the Medici rulership. Curiously though, it wasn't until 1780, when Livorno government reorganized, that Jews were declared eligible for various positions in the general court. Because of this rise in status, Jewish books became more prominent – including this 1797 published work.Item number: #10774Price: $750Traditional Mikdashספר עבודת מקדש - קול תפלה קול תחנה… [Sefer Avodat Mikdash][Livorno, Italy: 5557 (or 1797)].Details: • Collation: Complete• Language: Hebrew• Binding: Leather; secure• Size: ~6in X 4in (16cm x 10cm)• Very rareOur…

Description:
1747 1ed English Condamine Science Voyage Equador South America Amazon GeographyCharles Marie de La Condamine was an 18th-century French explorer who studied the geography. A French-Spanish expedition was sent to South America and the Arctic region in 1735, to determine the size and shape of the earth. The two expeditions proved that the earth is flattened at the Poles. La Condamine, a scientist on the expedition, returned home by crossing Brazil via the Amazon making it
'the first scientific exploration of the Amazon… The greatest geographical event of the eighteenth century as regards South America" (Hill).
"A very useful abridgment of this indispensable work, entirely satisfactory for nearly all purposes" (Goodman).
This first English edition of Condamine's 'Journal,' was officially published as a complete account in 1751 with a supplement in 1752, but the initial French printings of this abridgement were published in 1745 and 1746 with translations soon following.

Description:
The original, signed painting by Thorpe for the dust jacket of the trade edition – painting is framed and matted (black frame measures approximately 16 x 12 inches). This art had to be redone at the last possible moment because an editor at Harper decided that the jacket design must include a scene from Washington D.C. The mystery leads Leaphorn and Chee to leave the reservation and investigate in Washington – an unusual twist in the Hillerman mysteries, since the action seldom shifts far from the Navajo Reservation. The plot twist is what led to the decision to redo the jacket art. This painting is the original art, which appeared only on the Advanced Reading Copy of the book, and related early publisher's promotions for the title. There were also a number of proofs of the original jacket.A number of related items are included with the painting: a Fine, unread copy of the ARC in color wraps, to which Thorpe has added signed art to the half-title page; a front panel of one of an original proof… Read More

First Edition. (1993) Hardcover with d.j. Fine with near fine dust jacket. D.J. has slight curl on top edge and light rubbing on back. No worn edges. Tight binding with clean, sharp pages. No markings. 305 pages. Dolores Claiborne is a psychological thriller novel. The novel is narrated by the title character. Atypically for a King novel, it has no chapters, double-spacing between paragraphs, or other section breaks; thus the text is a single continuous narrative which reads like the transcription of a spoken monologue. This book is dedicated to King's mother: "For my mother, Ruth Pillsbury King."
