Dark green cloth with gilt lettering and light green decorative stamping with color floral plate on front board. xviii, 350pp. Color frontispiece, numerous illustrations (some color). Very good. Faintly edgeworn, with spine gilt rubbed. Tight, attractive first edition of this juvenile companion to Burgess's similar titles for birds and for animals -- and bearing fine autograph addition: Tipped before the frontispiece is a Typed Note Signed from Burgess, 1p, 7½" X 10¼" , Springfield, MA, 21 January 1939. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On his imprinted letterhead, Burgess tells this admirer "Thank you for your birthday greetings... I am glad you find my books worthwhile. A word of this kind once in a while is of vast encouragement to a writer and writers do need encouragement...." Boldly signed in full in black ink. A lovely first edition with nice content letter.
