The foreground depicts people sitting and chatting while others are praying on the steps leading up to the temple. Beautifully surrounded by palm trees and woods, the temple is seen in the background. This view, drawn from nature by Wilhelm Heine with figures by Eliphalet Brown Jr. and lithographed by George Ackerman appears in Francis Hawk's 'Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry'. In good condition with minor foxing.<br> <br> Dr. Francis Lister Hawks (1798 - 1866) was an American priest of the Episcopal Church, and a politician in North Carolina.<br/><br/>

Description:
New York.: Ackerman. [1856.]. Tinted lithograph, 16 x 23.2 cm, 20.3 x 28.9 cm (sheet), margins age-toned, and very lightly spotted, but in very good condition. Attractive illustration prepared for Perry's "Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan..." of a Buddhist Temple in Ceylon (Sri Lanka). The men at bottom right are American sailors who were on Perry's Expedition (1852-54), a strategic voyage which changed the Japanese policy of the imposed isolation (sakoku) dramatically. .
