Very Good+ in Wraps: shows only minor indications of use: just a hint of wear to the extremities (the outside edge of the front panel, the head and heel of the backstrip, and the lower corner of the rear panel have been reinforced with cellophane tape, as has a short, closed tear at the bottom edge of the rear panel); else moderate rubbing to the wrapper covers and the pages have tanned just slightly, due to aging. The binding is square and secure, but the backstrip is slightly concave and shows a crease; the text is clean. Former owner's name neatly printed in small letters at the bottom of the front endpaper. Shows very mild wear and a few minor flaws, but remains a very handsome copy: clean, sturdy, and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. (7.1 x 4.4 x 1.1 inches). 587 pages. Translated by H.T. Lowe-Porter. Lovely cover illustration by Edvard Munch of "The Linder Children". Weight: 9.9 ounces. Synopsis
Buddenbrooks was Thomas Mann's first novel, published in 1901 when he was twenty-six years old. The publication of the 2nd edition in 1903 confirmed that Buddenbrooks was a major literary success in Germany. It portrays the downfall (already announced in the subtitle, Decline of a family) of a wealthy mercantile family of Lübeck over four generations. The book is generally understood as a portrait of the German bourgeois society throughout several decades of the 19th century.
