Most of the paper has worn off of the spine. Cloth is still in place. Text block in very good condition. One of the front blank pages is loose. Previous owner's name on the printed book plate on the third page.

Book has been loved, but is still solid -- corners lightly and smoothly worn bottom and top of spine rubbed, portions of the design to spine rubbed away. Lovely round, global vignette to rear board, with about 17 Brownies, hand in hand, surrounding a motif of a globe with a bright sun in which is the image of an open book. Early edition, after the first, of this mischievous travel narrative about the creatures from Scottish folklore, given a Victorian update by Cox, have adventures across the world - in Japan, Turkey, Russia, and more. Copies of the Brownies books are generally found read to death. Their popularity, in conjunction with the rather poor construction of the books, means they are rarely found in nice condition. This is a great copy of an early printing. 10'' x 8''. Original glazed pictorial boards. Illustrated by Cox in black and white. xii, 144 pages. A bit of toning to boards, moreso at spine, else an excellent copy: strong hinges, clean text, all intact and unmarked.

Still though, to be this clean and to boast such a bright, well-preserved dustjacket from roughly 100 years ago is uncommon indeed. Tight and Near Fine in its laminate, pictorial boards (light offsetting at the endpapers) in a remarkably crisp, Near Fine dustjacket, with one very small closed tear at the front panel's top-edge and just a touch of very light soiling to the rear panel.
