Illustrator: Plates. 1.6 kg; XVI, 322, + XXIII photographic plates reproducing the papyri from the Jewish Colony at Elephantine. With original plain printed dustjacket which has tape repairs, and chipping at the head and tail of the spine, and sunning of the spine section and the fold over creases . The book in its grey coloured cloth with the Brooklyn Institute of arts and sciences colophon on the front panel has only darkened slightly on the top edge. Internally, apart from the original bookseller's sticker at the lower right-hand corner of the front paste down, the book is free of blemish. These are rare papyri of the 5th century BC, a collection unique in the Western world, are published here for the 1st time. Their existence was unknown until 1947 when they came to the Brooklyn Museum through a bequest, but it has been ascertained that they were acquired in 1895 by Charles Edwin Wilbour, the American Egyptologist, 3 years before his death. The documents conserver Jewish military Colony on the island of Elephantine, At Assuan in Egypt's and have as their central figure a temple servitor.. They give new information about the location of the Jewish Temple, which was destroyed in 410 BC, and end controversy over its restoration. Dr Kraeling has written an extensive account of the Colony and its history and has edited the new papyri with full commentary. John d Cooney, Curator of the Egyptian Department of the Brooklyn Museum has contributed an account of the unrolling of the papyri. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. Please refer to accompanying picture (s).
